Above the line definitionQuestion What does the term, "above the line" mean?
Answer On the business financial report called the Profit-and-Loss statement (also P&L, or Operating Statement), there are several sections, but two major ones: the top section which produces gross profit by subtracting sales revenue from cost-of-goods-sold; and the bottom section, where operating expenses are found.

The top section is referred to as "above the line" that separates gross profit elements from operating elements. So, when you hear someone say, "above the line" they are referring to gross profit and the associated elements. Search again for gross profit, gross profit margin, gross profit elements and bottom line. © 2007, Small Business Network, Inc., All Rights Reserved.
