Assembly line definition

Question
What is the definition of "assembly line"?
Answer
An assembly line is a production or manufacturing in which assembly are conducted in defined sequence with standardized parts and processes. Assembly lines are characterized by interchangeable parts, equipment and staff dedicated to individual steps in the sequence and an organized (often mechanized) flow of materials from beginning to end.

The assembly line is typically much more efficient in terms of costs and resources used than other forms of assembly for medium to high volume production as the line can be optimized. While the classic assembly line was labor intensive, but 21st century versions have evolved into having more technology input and less human input.

Automotive production lines are prototypical examples. In fact, Henry Ford didn't invent the automobile, but is given credit for introducing and perfecting the assembly line and revolutionized manufacturing.
