backflush definition

Question
What is the definition of "backflush"?
Answer
Backflush is the inventory management process of restocking as units are consumed in production. It is used to keep supplies consistent in the production pipeline, available just in time, as opposed to ordering in advance and guessing at how many will be needed for a period of time.

More and more, backflushing is an automated system that is set up based on certain initial parameters and is fulfilled through ongoing relationships with product suppliers.
