Sales people typically need training and knowledge in the following general areas:

- Sales techniques: Making initial contact, qualifying the prospect, determining customers’ requirements, demonstrating merchandise, closing the sale, producing add-on sales and handling objections, etc.

- Product knowledge: Describing the features and benefits in terms that the customer understands, knowing inventory levels and prices by memory, and being aware of financial considerations etc.

- Operational knowledge: How the company fulfills the sale and any related transactions.

- Customer service: Knowing how to sincerely thank a customer, inviting them back, communication skills, understanding and producing a satisfied customer.
