Brainstorming methodsQuestion What are the different methods of brainstorming?
Answer Brainstorming may be done individually or in groups using different recording methods. But the rules for brainstorming must be followed no matter which method is used. The four predominant methods are:
- Nominal Brainstorming: individuals make a list of options or ideas. - Nominal Group Brainstorming: groups of individuals make lists around the same topic that are subsequently combined. This may be done on paper or using computer software. - Group Brainstorming with a recorder: a group of people (optimally 4-7 in number) speak ideas out loud and a recorder writes them on a flip chart that everyone can see. - Group Brainstorming with sticky notes: individuals in the group write an idea on a sticky note, say it out loud and a volunteer places it on a flip chart that everyone can see. Computer software may be used when the group is not in one place.
