Of the three classic sources of small business capital - equity investment, profits and bank debt - it's generally accepted that loans from commercial banks are the largest source of capital to small businesses.

Bank debt represents more than 80 percent of the credit line market, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. More than 50 percent is in other debt areas, such as commercial mortgages, vehicle, equipment, and other loans.
