Consulting contract choice
Before beginning work on a professional service project, do my client and I need to sign a formal contract?
If possible, bypass this step and use your signed proposal as the contract.
Be thorough. Cover compensation, milestones, objectives, any expectations of the client and any other key points, such as, what you think you can deliver, and what you have less control over. Use business language that makes it easy for the client to understand and accept your terms.
Complex and expensive projects may very well require the protection of a more rigorously drafted contract. Your attorney should advise you on this.
