Disciplinary pay reduction

Question
Should a pay reduction be used as a disciplinary step instead of firing?
Answer
A pay reduction may be justified as a disciplinary tool, but don't expect it to deliver positive results.

Typically, if you can't motivate an employee to perform in a satisfactory way by positive and encouraging methods, using a punative step will not have the desired effect.
