Emoticon definition

Question
What are emoticons used in email and Instant Messaging?
Answer
Emoticons, or graphical images comprised of character keys, are used in email and Instant Messaging to convey an emotion. There are many, but here are a few examples:

The wink ;-) demonstrates humor, a joke, or something sarcastic.
The smile :-) signifies happiness, humor or fun.
The frown :-( indicates sadness or disappointment.

Use emoticons in moderation and never when professionalism is a priority.
