Emoticon useQuestion When is it appropriate to use emoticons in email?
Answer Emoticons, or graphical images comprised of character keys, should be used only in the proper context. Since visual and sound elements of communication are missing in email, emoticons can fill an emotional void.
If it's a formal communication, such as to someone with whom you are not very familiar, emoticons are not recommended. Use your writing skills to create an appropriate emotional tone instead. In more casual and less formal communication, use of emoticons is more appropriate. A good rule of thumb is to use emoticons in moderation. You don't want your message diluted and looking unprofessional because you plastered smiley faces all over your page.
