Employee pay increases

Question
How often should an employee receive a pay increase?
Answer
It's the employer's prerogative to set pay rates for employees and to periodically adjust those pay rates, unless otherwise defined or limited by employment or union agreements. The typical pay adjustment period is once each year.

During slow economic periods for the business, it's common for an employer to suspend pay adjustments until the business becomes profitable once again. Furthermore, raises for an individual employee can be suspended if that employee's performance is sub-par.
