Grant writing help

Question
Should I expect to pay a fee to apply for government grants?
Answer
The government isn't one single entity; there are many federal, state, and local agencies. So it's hard to generalize. Some grants require administrative fees, but these can be relatively small. Expect to pay at most a few hundred dollars.

Whether to pay an expert's fee to help you apply for a grant depends on your skills, competence, time and expectations. Some experts and consultants charge thousands of dollars to create grant proposals. Often, the fee covers their expertise and knowledge of the field; it's not an application fee. Using an expert may increase the likelihood that the grant writing work will be done right the first time.

Be careful when working with consultants. Some are professional and highly qualified. Some are not. Ask for references, talk with past clients and make an informed decision.
