The best place to find out what others are doing is to look within your industry. Talk with the staff of the national trade organization that serves your industry. It is likely that they will have some models or other useful information.

Poll your friends and industry contemporaries to see what they are doing. Unless you call a direct competitor, the basic structure of their compensation plans shouldn't be closely held information that they wouldn't want to share. It certainly isn't something that would be improper for you to ask them.
