Home-based business insuranceQuestion Does my homeowners insurance cover my home-based business?
Answer Probably not!
You may have some equipment coverage under your homeowner's policy for things like a computer that is used for business as well as personal use. However, homeowner's insurance is not meant to cover business equipment, nor liability for injuries to business visitors. Check with your insurance agent. Tell him or her what you're doing. Purchase the necessary coverage; it could be a rider on your homeowner's policy, or it could be an additional policy. Either way, now that you're in business, not only are your worldly belongings under your home's roof, but also all of your professional assets. Insurance is a cost of doing business that should be part of your operating budget.
