Home-based registration

Question
Do I have to register my home-based business with the municipality?
Answer
In many cases, no. But it depends on where you live.

Some jurisdictions require home-based business to identify themselves for several reasons. And some reasons also serve the business owner. Reasons for registration include:

- So the city, county or municipality can know how many local businesses are home-based.

- Should a neighbor complains about activity at your house, you've registered as a legitimate and reporting business.

To find out if you are required to register, contact your local chamber of commerce or the municipal code enforcement, zoning or business license office.
