There are many elements to the "first step," but here are two critical ones:

First, treat your desire to work from home as any other business proposition. Consider what you know how to do and enjoy doing, and how you might be able to market and sell it to potential customers. Don't minimize this step. Planning is key.

Second, be sure to spend time (including with your partner/spouse, if appropriate) really thinking about this next phase in your professional life and career. Remember that entrepreneurship isn't a sprint; it's a marathon. Prepare for the long-haul.
