How to start a new business

Question
How can I get started in opening my own business?
Answer
Being interested in starting a business is like saying "I want to become an athlete, what sport should I pursue?" It depends on your interests and personal capabilities.

As you work your full-time job, think of the things you like to do and in which you have knowledge and skills. Since you haven't yet identified what you want to do, you'll need to be patient: finding your "sport" could take years.

The biggest mistake you could make is jumping into a new endeavor without being totally committed and prepared. If I had to give you one specific direction, I would say look into becoming a franchisee. I predict that if you start researching what is involved in acquiring a franchise, one of three things will happen. You'll find a franchise you like, you'll identify your own opportunity without acquiring a franchise, or you'll realize that being an employee isn't such a bad deal after all.
