Impact of environment on creativity

Research has shown that the following 10 characteristics or dimensions of climate impact creativity and innovation:

1. Challenge: the degree to which members are involved and motivated.
2. Freedom: independence and discretion to make decisions.
3. Dynamism & liveliness: dynamic but not chaotic environments.
4. Trust & openness: emotional safety in working relationships.
5. Idea time: time to think and elaborate.
6. Playfulness & humor: a relaxed environment versus a stiff and gloomy one.
7. Conflicts: personal and interpersonal tension. More is NOT better.
8. Idea support: people are receptive and supportive rather than reflexively negative.
9. Debates: healthy discussion without individual attack.
10. Risk-taking: tolerance of ambiguity and uncertainty to "take a gamble."
