Introverts in a sales careerQuestion I am shy and introverted. I wonder how I would do in a sales career?
Answer Shyness and a career in sales aren't mutually exclusive, but shyness does present a challenge that must be managed. For example, if you can't find a way to engage people you don't know, you won't make many sales.
There are sales positions which, because of the nature of the industry, are more suitable for people you aren't outgoing, for example, the financial industry and some manufacturing. Introverts can have an advantage, because they tend to naturally make eye contact one to one and hold it longer. Study after study in sales conclude that eye contact in general communicates listening and caring. This is just one positive trait an introvert can bring to selling. Everyone has to overcome certain internal issues that can hold them back. Just as overly aggressive people have to harness and tone down their high energy demeanor, shy people have to push themselves in the other direction.
