Lot coding definition

Question
What is production lot coding?
Answer
Lot coding is the application of an identification number to a discrete batch of product. It's required by law for some products, such as food and drugs, to enable a recall, facilitate trouble-shooting, and to ensure that out-of-date product is not sold.

Coding is also used by manufacturers to track and manage inventories. Cost accounting and quality measures are often based on lots.
