Begin by talking to the faculty at a nearby school of journalism, somebody who teaches magazine publishing. Look for a publisher of an unrelated non-competitive magazine who might be able to fill you in.

Check out the web site www.mediainfo.com, the publisher of "Editor and Publisher" magazine, which is about the business of publishing magazines.

If you can find somebody selling a magazine-publishing business, contact them. Consider buying their business. At the very least, you'll get access to their past financial data, which will give you an idea of how the industry works. You might even land an experienced published willing to help you.
