Management style define policies

Question
I prefer a flexible management style without a bunch of rules. Why should I define policies?
Answer
When you are a small business owner entrepreneur working on your own or with several family members, you can generally handle employment issues without the need to put employment policies in writing.

But when your organization grows and you begin hiring employees, employment issues and questions become more complex. A properly written policy manual helps management to make employment decisions without unwittingly violating the law or creating employee dissension.

Policy guidelines help management to make employment decisions that comply with the various employment laws and help to minimize costly liability. Firms with as few as one employee are subject to certain labor laws that affect employment decisions. If your organization has 15 or more employees, you're probably subject to a variety of federal labor laws.

An employment policy can be written broadly to permit you to direct operations with a flexible management style. For example: an attendance control policy may state that "Excessive absenteeism is grounds for corrective discipline which may lead to discharge from employment." Such a statement gives employees a bottom-line message but does not specify what constitutes excessive absenteeism or what corrective action will be taken.
