Patent prosecution definition

Question
What is a patent prosecution?
Answer
Patent prosecution generally refers to the process of obtaining a patent from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). The process begins with the preparation and filing of the patent application with the USPTO.

A patent examiner is assigned the application and determines whether a patent should be granted on the invention. The patent prosecution process ends with either the issuance of a patent or a final rejection of the application by the examiner.
