The best, generally accepted steps for a performance improvement plan for non-performing employees include, but may not be limited to:

- Communicate the specific deficiencies
- Establish performance improvement goals
- Establish a probationary period of 30 to 90 days
- Identify the benefits of performing and the consequences of failing to perform
- Have the employee sign that they understand the steps being taken
- Stick to the plan
