Stock keeping unit definition

Question
What does the term "stock keeping unit" or SKU, mean?
Answer
A stock keeping unit (SKU) is a unique identifier assigned to a unit of work, such as a part in manufacturing, a finished good available for sale, or a service unit or other billable entity.

Individual SKU designation may be assigned to an item, variants, product lines, bundles, services, fees or attachments.

You might hear someone say they, "have 10,000 SKUs" as a way of quantifying the breadth of their customer offerings.

SKU's may be used for inventory management and accounting, as well as any other function that benefits from the identification and differentiation of components or units.
