Wholly owned subsidiary definition

Question
What is the definition of "wholly owned subsidiary"?
Answer
A wholly owned subsidiary is an entity that has its own brand names, market strategies and operating structure, but is in fact owned and at least somewhat controlled by another company, which is called the parent company. For example, the Mercury brand of automobile is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company.
