Your speech environment

Question
How important is the setting when giving a speech?
Answer
Setting is critical in giving a well-prepared speech. Your knowledge of the venue and the equipment being used can make or break your speech.

- Make sure your hosts know in advance what your equipment requirements are: projector, lavalier mike (so you can move around), lighting, etc.

- Meet with the technical people. Guide them and help them help you. Then thank them for their help.

- Make sure - well in advance of taking the stage - the equipment is working and set up as you need it.

- Test the microphones and the level at which your voice carries inside the room.

Being aware of and managing these factors will make you more comfortable with what you're doing and have you ahead of the game.
